Pay for Tweets? Super Followers Dumb or Genius

Twitter has announced two new upcoming features for its platform. The first is Super Follows, which is the company's first premium feature. The other is Communities.

After seeing OnlyFan's success, Twitter also launched Super Follows that allows users to charge their followers for access to special content. For a set monthly amount, the Super Followers will be able to, say, see exclusive content, get a subscribers-only newsletter, deals and discounts on your products, community access, a special supporter badge, and more. The options here depend on the account and what they want to offer to their subscribers. This allows Twitter to take a cut from these earnings.

The other feature is Communities. Users will be able to create and join groups that have a particular theme or interest. Those part of these Communities will then be able to see posts from like-minded individuals instead of the somewhat randomness of the current timeline structure. Much like Facebook Groups.

If you don't know Twitter's revenue is much less than its competitor. Facebook's annual revenue has amounted to roughly $86 billion (in 2019). Whereas Twitter revenue is only $3.72 billion (in 2020).In order to survive the competition in the social media space, Twitter needs to find other revenue sources.

In my opinion, These features are genius because they give creators options to monetize their content. I know a lot of people hate these features but the thing is that these features are for people who like to spend their money on Only Fans to see "exclusive content". Yesterday, #RIPTWITTER trend #1 on Twitter where people respond very negatively to these features.

There is no official word yet on when these features will become available.
